New Delhi, Oct 27 (IANS) More than a decade after it was first conceptualized, the Expenditure Finance Committee (EFC) has approved the Rs 2,117 crore Nag River Revitalization project for revival and revitalization of the river that lends its name to Nagpur in Maharashtra.

Following the Cabinet's approval, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari and an MP from Nagpur - in a series of tweets - said, a period of eight years has been fixed for this project.

"Three STP projects with a capacity of 92 MLD, 500 km sewerage network, pumping station and community toilets would be constructed (as part of this project), Gadkari said.

The quality of the Nag river had suffered for several decades due to dumping of untreated sewage. The project was earlier estimated at Rs 2,434 crore, of which the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) was to raise 15 per cent funding and rest was to come from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). However, the EFC has approved Rs 2117 crore.
