Kolkata, March 25 (IANS) In a bid to support the cause and fight the battle to eradicate the deadly threat of coronavirus, Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) President Avishek Dalmiya has decided to donate a sum of Rs 5 lakh towards the West Bengal governments Emergency Relief Fund.

The CAB has already announced a donation of Rs 25 lakh towards the West Bengal government's emergency relief fund.

"This is a time to fight together and eradicate the deadly virus from our society. In whatever limited manner I can, I am trying to show solidarity and contribute towards the cause," Avishek told IANS on Wednesday.

"We are all in this together, I believe and the sooner we find a way to wriggle out of it, the better," he added.

In an appeal, the youngest CAB President who is the son of former BCCI boss and celebrated administrator Jagmohan Dalmiya, had said: "It is the government's responsibility to take immediate measures to isolate towns and cities, districts and divisions where the virus is spreading -- including lockdowns wherever necessary. It is also a must to provide testing kits, masks and other equipment to hospitals.

"The effect of these radical steps will hurt wage earners, the poor, the marginalised most, and these people of our society must be supported by the rest of us.

"Therefore, an appeal to those whom God has blessed with plenty to come up with voluntary donations to the government's relief fund.

"Personally, I would want to meet some of the needs for the vulnerable by contributing to the government's emergency relief fund," he added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced a pan-India lockdown for 21 days on Tuesday night. In India, more than 500 confirmed cases of coronavirus have been reported till now and 11 lives have also been lost.

Hours before PM Modi had announced a 21-day lockdown, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had extended till March 31 a previously announced lockdown upto March 27 in the entire state.

At present, West Bengal has nine affected cases with one of the patients in the state succumbing to the disease.
