Historical Event on 8/14/1987
Bharat Ratna, India's highest award, was given to Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan (1890-1988), Frontier Gandhi. He is the first non-Indian to receive this honour.

2/11/1993	Andhra Naxalites release four out of six hostages.
10/16/1905	Bengal was partitioned by Lord Curzon on the pretext of it being too big to administer. Instead of dividing it on the basis of non-Bengali areas, the division was on the basis of Hindus and Muslims. Britishers thought that would succeed in increasing Hindu - Muslim tensions. The tremor of partition was felt throughout India and was regarded as an insult and challenge to Indian Nationalism. A movement was launched by the moderates. New method of protests 'Swadeshi and Swaraj' became the slogan of the common man and the whole of India was drawn into the national movement.

12/12/1908	Gaandhiji released from Volksrust Gaol. Indian National Congress adopts resolution on South Africa, criticizing the harsh, humiliating and cruel treatment to British Indians in South Africa as injurious to English Empire.
12/29/1885	A group of middle-class intellectuals in India, some of them British, found the Indian National Congress to be a voice of Indian opinion to the British government. This was the origin of the later Congress Party which was founded in Bombay.
12/25/1943	Japanese bombers raid Chittagong.
