The four basin states of Narmada valley - Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra - reach agreement to raise the height of Sardar Sarovar dam in Gujarat to 436' after which hydrological studies will be done for 5 years to decide whether the height should be raised to the awarded 455'.

8/15/1947On the the stroke of mid-night on 14th August 1947, India became independent and was partitioned. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru became the first prime minister and Dr. Rajendra Prasad became the first president of free India. The mixed economy policy was taken on a five-year plan basis for economic development. On 26th January 1950, India became a democratic and is the biggest democracy of the world today. In 1956, on the basis of languages, India was divided into 14 states and 6 union territories. Today, there are 27 states and 7 union territories.

10/26/1930Dr. Waldemar Modecal Haffkine, famous scientist, bacteriologist and professor, died in Paris. He had invented the Cholera vaccine in 1893 and a vaccine for Plague in 1897 at the Grant Medical College, Bombay.
6/11/1983Ghanshyam Das Birla, great freedom fighter, social reformer, pioneer of Indian business, industry, and nationalist, died at London at the age of 89.
5/25/1937Munshi Ajmeri passed away.
