6/9/1909Baburao Arnalkar, famous detective story writer, was born.
9/11/1967China and India exchange artillery fire on Sikkim-Tibet border.
10/16/1905Bengal was partitioned by Lord Curzon on the pretext of it being too big to administer. Instead of dividing it on the basis of non-Bengali areas, the division was on the basis of Hindus and Muslims. Britishers thought that would succeed in increasing Hindu - Muslim tensions. The tremor of partition was felt throughout India and was regarded as an insult and challenge to Indian Nationalism. A movement was launched by the moderates. New method of protests 'Swadeshi and Swaraj' became the slogan of the common man and the whole of India was drawn into the national movement.
8/6/1925Surendra Nath Banerjee died. He was one of the founders of mordern India and proponent of autonomy within the British Commonwealth. He was President of Indian National Congress twice, in 1895 at Pune and in 1902 at Ahmedabad.
2/18/1992Sikh extremists murder 17 people in Punjab.
5/27/1930India's major cities are seething with unrest following the arrest of Mahatma Gandhi and thousands of his followers in the campaign of civil disobedience against British rule. Civil unrest in Bombay, where at least six were killed and sixty injured.
10/26/1890Martyr Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi was born at Allahabad. He was also the editor of revolutionary weekly 'Pratap'.
6/8/1915Geeta Rahasya', written by Lokmanya Tilak, published.
