3/29/1995Admiral Dom Vasco-da-Gama (c.1469-1524)-I, Portuguese navigator, arrived in India. He sailed around the Cape of Good Hope to Calicut, Kerala with three vessels and was the first Westerner to sail to India from Europe.
5/19/1908Manik Bandopadhyay, modern Bengali novelist and story-writer, was born.
11/30/1998Ghasiram Yadav (74), member of Parliament representing Alawar in Rajasthan and former MLA and Minister in the State, died in Jaipur.
6/20/1992Carnatic musician Maharajapuram Santhanam died in a car accident in Villupuram in Tamil Nadu.
10/29/1964Priceless and irreplaceable gems, including the famed 'Star of India' of 563.35 carats and 2.5 inches in diameter, were stolen from the American Museum of Natural History, New York, USA, in a daring burglary. An alarm system was discontinued years ago as was the all-night guard in the gem hall, both for reasons of economy. The jewels were uninsured due to high-priced premiums. There were other jewels too that were also robbed during this time.
