8/19/1977	Earthquake measuring 7.7-8.9 on the Richter Scale hits Indian Ocean. It is believed to be the strongest ever earthquake.
1/8/2000	The Government reconstitutes the Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts and Trust and retains Mrs. Sonia Gandhi as a trustee along with Mr. P. V. Narasimha Rao, Prof. Yashpal and Dr. Abid Hussain.
1/8/2000	Sher Shah Sur died. He was fatally wounded in an explosion on Kalanjara fort while preparing for an attack. He introduced the new silver rupee-coin ""Rupiya"" based on ratio of 40 copper coin pieces (paisa) per rupee and built several roads including the longest road of India known as Grand Trunk Road (now Natioinal Highway-2).
9/29/1988	1988 Nobel Peace Prize for U.N. Peace-Keeping Forces.
6/29/1991	A 32-member Left Front cabinet led by Jyoti Basu sworn in in West Bengal.
11/12/1984	Rajiv Gandhi elected Congress (I) President.
10/24/1966	Yugoslavia, UAR call on the US at New Delhi to stop bombing of North Vietnam.
1/14/1946	Two jetties collapse in Ganges; 160 Hindu pilgrims are crushed.
6/7/1984	Indian Army troops, sent to Punjab to quell Sikh violence, stormed the Golden Temple in Amritsar, the holiest of Sikh shrines. More than 400 persons were reported killed in the assault at the shrine, including Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.
1/16/1988	L. K. Jha, famous economist and member of Rajya Sabha, died.
